Trump tracking thread / general hell thread - gorzek - 01-23-2025 Rather than make a new thread every time that dipshit does something (or people enabled by him do things), I guess a single thread for updates will do. Trump has effectively eliminated medical research in the US: https://www.science.org/content/article/trump-hits-nih-devastating-freezes-meetings-travel-communications-and-hiring Shutting down the NIH's research efforts is a massive blow to medical research both domestically and globally. Additionally, if a new pandemic emerges, we will not be warned about it by any US authorities, and it will probably be difficult for WHO to identify it because we're pulling out of that, too. Evidently making America great involves a bunch of people dying for no reason. But I guess that's American history in a nutshell. RE: Trump tracking thread - gorzek - 01-23-2025 All DOJ cases in the civil rights division frozen indefinitely: https://archive.is/eLxh2 RE: Trump tracking thread - Aloria - 01-23-2025 https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/2025/01/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-protects-civil-rights-and-merit-based-opportunity-by-ending-illegal-dei/ wow. the propaganda is thick on this one. "Illegal" DEI? the bar will be infinitely higher for anyone who isn't cis white male for those "merit promotions" RE: Trump tracking thread - gorzek - 01-23-2025 Rufo is a white supremacist who engineered the backlash against CRT, then "woke," and now DEI. his level of influence is beyond fucked. Someone I know actually got an email informing them that DEI hires are about to get fired. to comply with the EO. RE: Trump tracking thread - gorzek - 01-24-2025 I think anything is on the table right now, including that. RE: Trump tracking thread - gorzek - 01-24-2025 There was a warrantless ICE raid in Newark, NJ yesterday. I'm sure more are coming. RE: Trump tracking thread / general hell thread - gorzek - 01-25-2025 I am going to post some points I have heard but I want to be clear, THESE ARE NOT CONFIRMED. I am looking for confirmation and will try to determine which things have credible sources, though those will be hard to find since the mainstream media is fully on board with Trump now. I don't recommend reading this list if you are in a bad mood or feeling anxious. This is not gonna help you feel any better.
If you happen to have info about any of these, please let me know. Things are bad but it's hard to determine exactly how bad, especially with all major platforms cooperating with the fascists, making them inclined to suppress to anything that might piss off their masters. RE: Trump tracking thread / general hell thread - FrodoSwaggins - 01-25-2025 I mean, if you are going to post a nice bullet point rundown (like this), that might be good enough for a new topic, so it shows up on peoples "new" feed. As for the content itself: NATO countries are preparing for possible military conflict with the US due to Trump's ambitions for Greenland. -- There is no preparation, above and beyond the obvious. Let's keep things in perspective. Other country's military will always train on scenarios that involve international military conflict. Right now, EU nations are planning for conflict with the US and some of them are holding air and military drills. On the other hand, there's no training scenario that will prepare any UN nation or several working together to withstand the US parking an aircraft carrier offshore of any nation in the world and arranging a country-wide appointment with the ancestors courtesy of 12 hours of airstrikes. Other countries have tanks, soldiers, air defense, navies, but they've got nothing that's going to stop the US in a total war. Luckily, it takes a 2/3 majority to withdraw from NATO and even Trump is not likely to pull out of the UN, which is great because it means that a lot of the world is still technically our allies. If Trump wants Greenland, he'll take it, and it will probably be bloodless. There will be sanctions, international whining, maybe some stochastic terror and a bit of guerilla warfare (probably not), but no one is looking to get carpet bombed by a reality TV star over Greenland. While we're on the topic, I'd also wager that US will take the Panama Canal, same deal. Will we bother taking Mexico? Depends on how hard the fight taking planeloads of refugees / deportees. They can either capitulate, which is shitty, or they can give a psychotic 78 year old his best excuse yet for "deploying US troops to Mexico to secure an airstrip for humanitarian purposes" and you know he'll use some of that phrasing. Feel free to respond to this. I will probably come back and respond to some of these other points later too. RE: Trump tracking thread / general hell thread - gorzek - 01-26-2025 just as a general comment, i think expecting this administration to follow rules is too optimistic. it doesn't take a 2/3 majority to withdraw from NATO, not if Trump simply decides we're out and pulls out all our military assets and behaves as if we are no longer in NATO. rules bind people who are willing to follow them, not people who don't care about them, you know? RE: Trump tracking thread / general hell thread - gorzek - 01-27-2025 There's been a lot over the past few days. Trump was sending military planes with Colombian migrants to Colombia; the latter refused to let them land because it's shitty to treat people like cargo in this way. Trump threatened tariffs and various other punitive measures, so they came to a compromise. Soldiers discharged for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine will be reinstated. He is still pushing to get rid of birthright citizenship--a policy dozens of countries have, by the way, despite clowns like JD Vance claiming "nobody else does this." ICE raids are continuing. There are now quotas for each field office for how many people they must arrest each day. It's only been a week... RE: Trump tracking thread / general hell thread - antipelican - 01-27-2025 Let's not forget the EO that attempts to erase the existence of trans people. www.msnbc.com/msnbc/amp/rcna189045 Having trouble finding mainstream news articles but anecdotally have heard of trans people with x on their passports being detained and prevented from flying at airports in the US. Additionally, all current passport applications in process requesting a gender change are now frozen. Who knows when or if those folks will get their documents back. RE: Trump tracking thread / general hell thread - gorzek - 01-27-2025 I've been hearing similar things. Consensus seems to be that if you are trans and/or have an X gender marker on your passport, a) beware of interstate/international travel and b) do not hand your passport to any government official if you can avoid it, because you may not get it back. RE: Trump tracking thread / general hell thread - gorzek - 01-28-2025 Trump is freezing all federal grants: https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/trump-presidency-news-federal-grants-01-28-25/index.html Headlines don't really do this justice. This is a defunding of almost everything anyone takes for granted in their daily life in this country. This guts most nonprofits, virtually all homeless and battered women's shelters, community support services of every kind, municipal maintenance and improvement projects, medical research, every grad student is basically fucked. Universities will have to slash staff. Foreign aid is also gone, which is pretty much the one good thing the US does for the world. This is in addition to the efforts to fire a bunch of federal workers and carry out mass deportations. He is simultaneously putting a ton of people out of work *and* getting rid of people who do all kinds of essential jobs. If he thinks firing all the "woke DEI" employees will get them to go pick vegetables and sweep Walmart floors... good luck, I guess? I had a feeling he and his goons would feel emboldened to do too much too fast and overreach. This is going to hurt so many people so quickly. And this isn't a country where our leaders hide in fortresses, never to be seen the public. We have an extremely publicly visible and accessible government. I'm just saying. You can't piss off this many people and go walking around in public like it's fine. RE: Trump tracking thread / general hell thread - gorzek - 01-28-2025 One point of frustration is that people fixate on Trump going after "DEI" but part of this has been killing all accessibility programs. This isn't just war on touchy-feely diversity rhetoric (never mind that that's not what DEI is, but it's certainly what people imagine it to be), but also war on disabled people. Republicans got a taste of purging the weak and vulnerable during COVID, albeit more by accident than design. This time they are doing it on purpose. RE: Trump tracking thread / general hell thread - antipelican - 01-28-2025 This grant freeze will also affect state government on a massive scale, as many state programs are partially or fully funded by federal grants. |
