  what are you HODLing?

I have embarrassingly small positions in anything, really, but here's what I have at least some amount of that I am committed to holding onto (or even buying more of):

  • JEPQ - A premium income ETF
  • REFI - A real estate investment trust
  • ABR - Another REIT
  • AOMR - Another REIT
  • SCHD - Another ETF
  • MITT - Another REIT

Gee, sense a pattern here? Anyway. All of these pay dividends, which I reinvest immediately.

My amateur ass thinks ETFs and REITs are not too bad. They are less gambly than playing penny stocks or volatile tech stocks, but of course they don't really moon, either.

Since I lost some money playing penny stocks I'm done with that whole game. It's not for me. (It wasn't much, maybe the price of a video game, but still, yuck.)

What about the rest of you?

What'd we miss?

Windows setup

  1. On first boot, disable OneDrive,
  2. Windows Security and Microsoft Edge. Uninstall OneDrive from Apps.
  3. Go to Settings -> Accounts -> Windows Backup and DISABLE "Remember My Apps" and "Remember My
  4. Preferences"
  5. Run Windows updates until prompted to restart.
  6. When restarted, check for Windows updates 1 more time.
  7. When Windows Update says "You're up
  8. to date", download Firefox via Microsoft Edge and wipe all history from
  9. Microsoft Edge.
  10. Continue with all 3 ticks in Firefox and
  11. skip the next 2 stops.
  12. Add all browser extensions, such as:
  13. uBlock Origin
  14. Skip Redirect
  15. Dark Reader
  16. SponsorBlock

  RULES

Obviously, we need rules in this subforum specially.

  1. Nothing in here is investment advice! Anything discussed here is for informational purposes only!
  2. All investments carry risk, up to and including total loss of your investment! In some cases, you can lose even more than you invested! Investor beware!
  3. There may be algorithmically-selected "interesting stocks" at some point in this forum. Again, these are for informational purposes only. Do your research before making any investments.
  4. Nobody affiliated with this forum, including its owner, is responsible if you lose your shirt gambling on the stock market. Don't invest more than you can afford to lose!

That said... have fun! Spin the wheel...

Oh, a "currently reading" thread, how novel. Nobody's ever made one of those.

(Novel, get it? Heh heh! Look, I am cringe.)

Post about what you are currently reading. If you want to. I'm not your boss.

I am currently reading Trans/Rad/Fem by Talia Bhatt. You can find it here: https://taliabhatt.itch.io/transradfem

I've read a couple of the essays within so far. I should point out that her purpose here is to reclaim Second Wave feminism as liberatory and transfeminist. If that sentence is too "inside baseball" for you, just know that there are so-called feminists who reject trans people, to the point that their term for themselves is "trans-exclusionary radical feminists," aka TERFs.

But in much the same way that "toxic masculinity" refers to a type of masculinity rather than describing all masculinity, trans-exclusionary radical feminists are not the only kind of radical feminists there can be. At least, that seems to be Bhatt's perspective. I haven't gotten to that part of the book yet but I understand that's where it's going.

I am not sure if radfem is something that needs to be reclaimed; the why is probably less important than the what, as in "what is to be done?" And her intention is a program to dismantle patriarchy, a goal I can hardly disagree with.

I might post more thoughts about this later.

Obviously, everybody is welcome to talk about whatever they are reading. Please do not make this a debate thread. I would be happy to discuss anything contentious in more depth in the politics forum!

  roleplay workshopping

I'm working with a few other people to put together a roleplaying theme for the forums. Nobody has to participate in this if they don't wanna, it'll just be "vibes" for those who don't want to play.

The theme I have in mind at this point is cyberpunk, but not "high cyberpunk" like you usually get. The peak has passed. The Earth has been stripped. Megacities still exist. Some still even thrive. But the cracks are showing and the end may not be far off...

Proposed factions (subject to change):

  • Scrappers - Scavengers who recycle and repurpose technology discarded from the cities. Resourceful and distrustful of authority. They live mainly in small communities in rural areas, often not far from cities. Some persist as roving bands, moving from place to place. They avoid contact with "organized" civilization, and are typically hostile to outsiders. Organizing principle: Autonomy
  • Singularitans - Technology has become their god. They believe in the infinite potential of technology and that humanity's only role is to bring about artificial general intelligence so that humanity might submit to it and thrive under its guidance. These are people who take Roko's Basilisk a little too seriously. Neutral toward most people, but actively hostile to anyone who is anti-technology. Notably, they are a heretical offshoot of the Cybercult. Organizing principle: Unity
  • Strivers - This faction is mostly late teens and young adults. Disillusioned with the way society has been run in the past, they want to build a better future rather than accept the decline that surrounds them. They believe they can reform society from within through agitation and rebellion, disband the megacorps, and bring humanity broad-based prosperity. This is the goody-two-shoes idealistic faction. Organizing Principle: Compassion
  • Cybercult - People who have fully embraced cybernetic enhancements, even to the point of no longer being recognizably human. These are your ultra-transhumanists. Their beliefs are incredibly varied and often incomprehensible to outsiders. They tend to live in enclaves in or near massive tech complexes like autofactories, power plants, etc. They tend to want to be left alone though they will organize raids to acquire new technology if they can't obtain it legitimately. Organizing Principle: Change
  • Podders - Isolationists devoted to rebuilding humanity after the collapse by collecting and preserving pre-cyber technology. They are something of a cross between Scrappers and Strivers, in that they are idealistic, resourceful, and anti-authority. Organizing principle: Survival

Certainly welcoming any thoughts on this. I'll post more as I think on it further.

As I noted elsewhere, everybody now has "Credits" in their account. I'm going to give everybody 100 to start (you get it by default now when you join, but if you joined earlier you don't have any.) You gain 1 credit for every "good" post ("goodness" is determined via a very secret sauce.) You get 1000 if you refer someone. Obviously, I am heavily incentivizing that. Smile

There will eventually be "items" you can buy and display on your profile. They may also have other functions, to be determined.

This is very WIP, so don't be surprised if you see things change around.

Also note there's an "Economy Hub" link in the topmost menu bar (on the default theme, might be elsewhere in other themes.)

If you don't see an Economy Hub link, you can always reach it here: https://weliveinhell.net/misc.php?action=economy_hub

I am entertaining ideas on what we can do with this, so hit me! I realized this is the best place to talk about it since this is, after all, the "fun & games" forum.
